The Tiffin University volleyball team (8-12, 3-8 G-MAC) got a 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-17) sweep over Malone on Saturday afternoon as the Dragons played their final regular season road match.
The two teams traded points to begin the match until the Dragons won four of five to take a 9-6 lead following a kill by Katelyn Owens and an attack error by the Pioneers. The Dragons continued to hold onto a slim advantage and Kaylee Freund made it 22-15 following a kill. Tiffin finished strong, winning the final three points and six of seven overall to take the first set and Freund ended the set with another kill.
In the second set, Malone held an early advantage until an ace by Alyse Smith made it 12-12. The Dragons had to rally back as they faced a 20-17 deficit until three straight kills (two by Freund and one by Maddie Daniel) made it 20-20. It was tied once again at 23, and Owens closed it out with back-to-back kills.
Just like the first two, the third set was tight to start that saw the teams trade two-point runs. The Dragons eventually gave themselves some distance winning five straight and 10 of 11 to turn a 9-8 deficit into an 18-10 lead. Malone attempted a late rally, cutting the deficit in half 20-16 but the Dragons were able to finish strong again, winning five of the final six points and Owens clinched the sweep for the Dragons with a kill.
Freund led the way offensively recording 17 kills on 21 attempts. Olivia Karhoff had six kills and 16 digs. Owens had 10 kills and five digs. Maggie Pavlansky had 47 assists.
The Dragons finished with a hitting percentage of .430, their second highest of the season.
