Tiffin University (3-2, 2-1 G-MAC) took advantage of big plays in the third quarter to overcome a first-half deficit and defeat Hillsdale 28-21.
Trailing 21-14 at halftime, the Dragons scored on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter. TU tied the game when
Alex Johnson was forced to scramble out of the pocket, rolling right and firing it downfield to
Ethan Holbrook, who shook off a tackler and then raced down the visiting sideline 69 yards at the 9:59 mark to make it 21-21.
On its next possession, Tiffin again struck on its second play, as Johnson found
Javier Wills on the home sideline for an 87-yard strike to go ahead 28-21.
Hillsdale had two possessions in the fourth quarter and came closest to tying the game with their final one. Starting on its own 20-yard line, the Chargers marched down the field to Tiffin's 17-yard line but failed on fourth down as Tiffin took over. The Dragons then picked up three first downs over the final 4:25 to run the clock out.
Hillsdale opened scoring at the 6:50 mark when an interception off Johnson was returned 8 yards to put them up 7-0.
Tiffin evened the score at 7:18 of the second quarter when Holbrook picked up a 7-yard TD toss from Johnson, taking advantage of a short field to make it 7-7.
The Chargers answered immediately on an 86-yard kickoff return that vaulted them ahead 14-7.Â
The Dragons mounted a 75-yard drive that ended with a 20-yard TD catch from
Emari White at the 2:12 mark of the second quarter. Hillsdale, however, responded with a last-minute drive, scoring with 13 seconds left on a 3-yard pass that capped a 75-yard drive.
Overall Tiffin outgained Hillsdale 410-294 including 291-179 through the air. Tiffin also picked up 10 of 15 third-down attempts while holding the Chargers to just 4 for 13.Â
Johnson finished 19 for 27 for 291 yards with 4 touchdowns. Wills led the way with 87 yards receiving while Holbrook had 77 and White had 62.
Tyrese Banks-Dorn had 84 yards rushing.
Defensively
Jacob Tueimeh had 14 tackles with a tackle for loss while
Malik Baker,
Dennis Crawford, and
Isaiah Funches-Foster all had 8 stops each.
Khris Walton also had 7 tackles with a tackle for loss and a half sack. Funches-Foster also had a 60-yard interception return, while
Kevin Hornbeak had a sack and
Gio Albanese also had a half sack.
Ethan Evers and
Danny Mason both had 6 tackles.
