Tiffin University (20-16, 6-6 G-MAC) looked in prime position to post a sweep of visiting Ashland but was forced to settle for a split, winning the opener 5-0 and falling in 8 innings 7-6.
In the opener,
Claire Feldkamp went the distance, tossing 7 innings and allowing just four hits with 7 strikeouts. She allowed no extra base hits and only one player reached scoring position for the Eagles.
Tiffin did most of its damage in the third inning, scoring four runs.
Lydia Kobie walked followed by singles from
Maddie Woods and
Jules King to load the bases. Two runs then scored on an error at second base. A fielder's choice then brought in another run, and
Molly Koesters drove in the final run with a single.
Tiffin got its final run in the sixth. With two outs, King singled. Pinch runner
Bailey Hamilton then scored on
Reagan Mengerink's double.
In the nightcap, Tiffin jumped out to a 5-0 lead heading to the fifth inning but could not hold the lead.Â
Tiffin scored in each of the first four innings. In the first, Woods reached on an error at second. She then scored on King's single. After King stole second, Koesters singled to drive her home and give TU a 2-0 lead.
In the second,
Tara Gall singled. Pinch runner
Maya Miles was then sacrificed to second. After a single by Woods and a walk to King, Miles scored on Mengerink's sacrifice fly.
In the third, Koesters reached first on an error. Pinch runner
Ryan Wallace stole second and third and then came home on
Aubrie Harper's ground out to second.
In the fourth, Kobie doubled and came home on Woods's single as TU pushed their lead to 5-0.
Ashland started its comeback in the fifth inning as TU starter King faltered. King exited after tossing 4.1 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts. Feldkamp entered in relief and held the lead at 5-3 entering the 7th inning.
After picking up a run on two hits, an error by the Dragons allowed the tying run to score and send the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Dragons had the winning run on third with one out but a strikeout and fly out to left field ended the threat.
After Ashland got two runs in the top of the 8th, the Dragons tried to rally. Harper singled and pinch runner
Sam Peterkoski stole second. After moving to third on a Kobie single with one out, Peterkoski scored on a sacrifice fly by Woods. A fly out to right field left the tying run on first base.
Feldkamp took the loss in game two, tossing 3.2 innings of relief and allowing 3 earned runs.Â
Kobie had the lone extra base hit for TU with a double.
