Four Dragons advance to National Championships

Tiffin University finished tied for fourth at the Super Region III tourney, sending four grapplers to the NCAA National Championships in the process.

Zack Donathan, Anthony Aniciete, Max Shore, and David Davis all will make the trip to the national championships in Park City, Kansas on March 15-16.

Donathan was the lone region champion for Tiffin, winning the 141 pound weight class. The nation's top-ranked wrestler at 141 and defending national champion posted three wins. He opened with a pin in 2:05 over Davis & Elkins and then advanced to the title bout with another pin in 4:08 over Findlay. Donathan then posted a dramatic last-second victory over Corey Gamet of Lake Erie 4-2 for the title.

Aniciete (125) finished 2nd overall. He posted a 4-1 decision over Glenville State in the quarterfinal and then advanced to the finals with a 2-1 win over Davenport. In the finals, Luke Acuna of Ashland won a narrow decision 8-5 for the title.

Shore, the nation's leader in tech falls, had a good showing at 133 pounds. After falling in his opener by major decision 23-13 to Grand Valley State, Shore won the next four bouts to earn his place at nationals. He posted a 15-0 tech fall over Notre Dame, a pin in 1:15 over West Liberty, and a 6-2 score over Findlay to land in the third-place match. With a trip to nationals on the line, Shore came up with a big 17-2 tech fall win over Grand Valley State, avenging his defeat by Collin Twigg in the first match with a win in the rematch.

Davis (174) also battled through consolations to land his place at nationals. After beating Findlay 4-2 in his opener, he then fell to Grand Valley State 21-4. He bounced back with a 11-4 win over West Liberty and then won a close 7-4 bout over Kenny Snyder of Findlay.

Clayton Ours (285) finished 4th overall. He got a pin in 48 seconds over Findlay, fell to West Liberty in 3:47, then defeated Ashland via fall in 4:54. In the deciding third-place match, Ours fell to La'Ron Parks of Notre Dame via pin in 4:50.

Nolan Gessler (149) finished 5th. He beat Ashland 4-1 but then dropped two bouts, falling to Grand Valley State 9-4 and Glenville State 8-3. He won the 5th-place match by defeating Ashland again 7-1.

Lucas Salmon (184) also was 5th. He fell to Grand Valley State 3-2 in his opener but then won two in a row. He pinned Davis & Elkins in 1:37 and Davenport in 2:08. After falling to Glenville State in another close one 5-3, he won the 5th-place match by medical forfeit over Lake Erie.

In other action, Jakob Hurley (165) got an 8-6 win over Davis & Elkins.
