Box Score Four Dragons finished in double figures, but the Tiffin University men's basketball team (0-2) fell behind by a wide margin in the second half and despite a late run, lost 73-64 to Lewis University to finish opening weekend.
An early three by Allen Fordham put the Dragons up 4-2 and Lewis answered with a three on their next possession to take the lead, and the Flyers would lead for the rest of the game. Buckets by Dekyre Fuller and Jacob Pleiman tied the game at 18 with 11:12 remaining in the first half, but a Tiffin turnover led to another three by the Flyers as Lewis regained the lead.
Over the final 10:17 of the half, the Dragons were outscored 16-6 and trailed 34-24 at the break.
The two teams traded buckets to start the second half and a free throw by DJ Gooden cut the deficit to 47-35. The Flyers then went on an 8-0 run to take a 20-point lead, 55-35.
The Flyers expanded their lead to 23, the largest of the game, with 5:22 remaining in the game. The Dragons then made their next four baskets to cut it 68-54 with 2:48 remaining. Overall, for the final 5:22 of the game, Tiffin outscored Lewis 19-5 and all five points by the Flyers came from the free throw line as the Dragons attempted to extend the game but the Flyers were excellent from the free throw line all game, going 22-for-24.
Dekyre Fuller led all scorers with 25, Allen Fordham finished with 13 while Jacob Pleiman and Michael Lucarotti chipped in with 12 and 11, respectively. Lucarotti grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Both teams shot the ball at just over 40 percent, but the difference in the game was the free throw line. Both teams only missed two, but the Flyers made double the number of free throws as Tiffin and nearly doubled the Dragons in attempts.
The Dragons travel to Kentucky on Wednesday, November 13 for a game against Kentucky State at 6 p.m.
