Late touchdown sinks Dragons at Hillsdale 20-17

Tiffin University (7-3, 6-2 G-MAC) gave up a touchdown with just 44 seconds remaining, falling to Hillsdale on the road 20-17.

Tiffin led for most of the game and opened scoring on its second possession of the game. After Kevin Hornbeak blocked a Chargers' punt, the Dragons started their drive on the Hillsdale 32 yard line. Alex Johnson capped the short drive with a 16-yard TD pass to Jalen Thomas at the 8:01 mark to take a 7-0 lead.

Hillsdale scored on its next possession but missed the extra point to leave TU in the lead 7-6.

Ben Rudolph gave TU three more points with a 43-yard field goal at the start of the second quarter as Tiffin inched ahead 10-6.

Neither team could make headway in the second quarter until Hillsdale started its drive with 3:30 left in the half. The Chargers drove 70 yards before scoring with just 26 seconds left to take a 13-10 lead into the halftime break.

Tiffin's lone score of the second half came midway through the third quarter. On its opening drive of the half, Tiffin started on its own 14-yard line and drove down field, with Thomas hauling in another Johnson pass for 38 yards to keep the drive going. Will Jackson-Linkhart caught a 5-yard TD pass from Johnson to put Tiffin back on top 17-13.

Tiffin's defense made numerous defensive stands in the fourth quarter to try and preserve the lead. With 3:44 left and Hillsdale going for it on 4th-and-1 from Tiffin's 2-yard line, Hornbeak made a huge stop, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Jacob Tuiemeh on the 1-yard line.

The Dragons could not get a first down, however, and punted the ball away with 2:46 left on the clock. Once again the defense forced a fourth down play, this time 4th-and-8 from the Tiffin 16-yard line. This time, though, Hillsdale connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass with just 44 seconds remaining to jump back on top for good.

One last attempt by the Dragons with 37 seconds remaining came up short as time ran out with Tiffin on the Hillsdale 45-yard line.

Overall the Dragons' offense was outgained 300-248. Hillsdale had 18 first downs to Tiffin's 12 with Tiffin gaining just 38 yards on the ground. Time of possession was a big factor as well, as Hillsdale had the ball for nearly 9:00 longer than Tiffin.

Thomas led the offense with 90 yards receiving while Joey Zalewski also had 43 yards receiving. Ronald Blackman led the rushers with 58 yards. Johnson finished 18 for 30 for 210 yards.

Khris Walton had a strong day defensively, posting 11 tackles with 3 sacks. Tuiemeh also had 11 stops with a fumble recovery, and Jalen Coles also had 11 tackles. Collier Brown also had 9 tackles.
