Box Score Tiffin University (7-2, 6-1 G-MAC) had its most productive offensive day of the season, racking up 616 yards of total offense in a 54-14 win at Kentucky Wesleyan.
The Dragons got off on the right foot from the opening kickoff, scoring on all three of its first quarter possessions.
Alex Johnson capped a 72 yard drive with a 20 yard touchdown pass to
Javier Wills to put TU up 7-0 at the 9:05 mark of the quarter.
After two consecutive three-and-outs by the Dragons' defense, TU scored again as Johnson connected with
Ethan Holbrook on a short route that he then turned into a 60-yard TD scamper on the first play of the drive. TU led 14-0 at the 4:18 mark.
Following a 44-yard touchdown pass from KWC, the Dragons bounced back with a big 51-yard pass play from Johnson to
Jalen Thomas that led to an 18-yard touchdown run by
Ronald Blackman to make it 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.Â
The Panthers scored again midway through the second quarter to draw to within 21-14 but the defense got in on the action with just 54 seconds remaining in the half when Jacob Tueimeh picked off a KWC pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown that gave TU a 28-14 halftime lead.
TU put the game out of reach with a dominating third quarter performance. The first of Tiffin's three scores came on their opening possession of the half when
Ben Rudolph booted a 43-yard field goal at the 8:11 mark to make it 31-14.
Tiffin's next possession last just one play, as Blackman rushed right for 58 yards for another long touchdown run. After another three-and-out, Tiffin finished off the quarter with a 67 yard drive capped off by a Johnson 17 yard TD strike to
Joey Zalewski that made it 45-14 heading to the fourth quarter.
Tiffin's big play offense struck again early in the fourth quarter, with Johnson connecting with Zalewski again, this time for 45 yards to make it 52-14. After a punt by
Joseph Weiers pinned the Panthers on their own 1-yard line,
Kevin Hornbeak finished the Dragons scoring with a sack in the end zone for a safety.
Tiffin dominated on both sides of the ball, outgaining KWC 616-215 including a huge 267-45 rushing edge. They held a 27-9 first down advantage while holding the Panthers to 3-for-12 on third-down conversions. The Dragons also had a 13:00 time of possession lead.
Blackman finished with 207 yards rushing on 23 carries for a 9.0 yards per rush average with 2 scores.
Jalen Thomas had 132 yards receiving while Zalewski had 62 yards and Blackman tacked on 49 yards, giving him 256 all-purpose yards. Holbrook also had 60 yards receiving.
Johnson finished 15 for 24 for 349 yards and 4 touchdowns with no interceptions. Weiers averaged 45.2 yards per punt with 3 inside the 20.
Hornbeak and
Clarence Gossett posted sacks while
Isaiah Funches-Foster led the team with 4 tackles.
