Dragons bested by top seed Hillsdale in G-MAC Quarterfinals

The Tiffin University volleyball team (13-14) saw their season come to an end on Tuesday night, falling to #1 seed Hillsdale in straight sets 3-0 (23-25, 15-25, 22-25) in one of the four G-MAC Quarterfinals.

Hillsdale got off to a quick start and maintained a slim lead in the early stages of the first set. The Dragons kept it close and a service ace by Olivia Karhoff and a kill by Katelyn Owens gave TU their first lead of 15-14. The Chargers won six of the next eight to take the lead and momentum back, but the Dragons rallied to tie it at 23 following a kill by Owens and assisted block by Owens and Addison Conti. The rally forced a Chargers timeout, and Hillsdale came out of it with a kill and block to take a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers got off to another fast start in the second set, winning six of the first eight and 12 of the first 17 overall. Kenedi Goon started the set with a kill, but Hillsdale got off to the quick start thanks to four kills and an ace. A couple offensive errors by the Chargers made it 23-15, but Hillsdale would eventually clinch the set on a kill.

Set three was another battle and this time it was the Dragons who started fast. Tiffin won seven of the first 11 following back-to-back kills by Taylor Peterson and Owens. A kill by Wakaya Wilson and block by Goon and Kaylee Freund gave TU an 11-10 lead. Following the block, Hillsdale went on a mini 6-0 run to take a 16-11 lead and they would lead the rest of the way as the run proved to be the difference in the set. Tiffin went on two different mini runs of 3-0, but they were unable to rally back and tie it. Tiffin cut the deficit to 24-22, but Hillsdale once again ended the set on a kill to advance to the semifinals.

Goon led the way offensively with 12 kills and both Wilson and Owens chipped in with seven. Conti recorded a team-high 19 assists and Diana Heitkamp recorded a team-high nine digs.

Overall, Tiffin hit .229 while Hillsdale finished with a hitting percentage of .322.
