Strong second half leads Tiffin over Walsh 38-21

Tiffin University (5-2, 4-1 G-MAC) used a strong second half and a season-best outing from quarterback Alex Johnson to finish off Walsh 38-21 on the road.

The first half was a close one with the Dragons heading into halftime with a 17-14 lead. Walsh opened and closed the half with scoring drives, with the Dragons scoring the points in between.

Walsh took its opening drive of the game and moved 81 yards before scoring on a 12-yard run to take a 7-0 lead.

Tiffin answered seconds later when Johnson hit Ethan Holbrook on a 78-yard pass play at the 11:03 mark of the first quarter to tie the score 7-7.

Ben Rudolph opened the second quarter with a 22-yard field goal to put TU on top 10-7, capping a 53-yard drive for the Dragons.

The Dragons ate up 6:39 late in the second quarter on their next scoring drive. Johnson and Ronald Blackman mixed passing and rushing efforts before Johnson rushed it in from one yard out to put Tiffin ahead 17-7.

Walsh, however, tried to grab the momentum heading to the halftime lockerroom, scoring a touchdown on a 63-yard drive in just 48 seconds to pull to within 17-14 at the break.

Tiffin completely dominated the third quarter, holding the ball for over 13 minutes and posting two touchdowns. They had scoring drives covering 75 and 74 yards, with Johnson hitting Javier Wills on a 34-yard TD strike at the 9:03 mark and then connecting with Will Jackson-Linkhart on a 10-yard pass at the 44 second mark as Tiffin streaked out to a 31-14 lead.

Tiffin scored on its third consecutive possession of the half, as Johnson hit Wills on a big 49-yard pass play before connecting with Holbrook on a 22-yard touchdown pass at the 7:04 mark of the fourth quarter to cap an 88-yard drive in just four plays to make the score 38-14.

Overall Johnson passed for 403 yards on 27 of 36 passing with no interceptions and 4 touchdowns while also rushing for another score. 

Holbrook finished with 110 yards receiving on 4 catches while also totaling 179 all-purpose yards. Wills also had 107 yards on 5 connections. Jalen Thomas added 66 yards while Jackson-Linkhart also had 54 yards. Blackman led the team with 89 yards rushing. 

The Dragons outgained Walsh 495-365 in total offense while TU's defense also held Walsh to just 4 for 11 on third-down conversions. Tiffin also held a time of possession edge 35:14 to 24:46.

Defensively Jacob Tueimeh led the team with 8 tackles and a tackle for loss. Khris Walton added 6 tackles with a half sack while Darius Hylick and Gio Albanese had 5 stops each with Albanese also getting a half sack.
