Tiffin offense turns on the jets in 55-30 win over Ashland

Box Score

Tiffin University (4-0, 2-0 G-MAC) had multiple scores in every quarter, blasting past Ashland 55-30 at Frost Kalnow Stadium.

Ashland got on the board first in the game, scoring on an 11-yard TD pass at the 7:51 mark of the first quarter to cap an 8-play, 70-yard drive to lead 7-0.

The TD sparked an explosion by the Dragons, who responded with 28 unanswered points to close out the first half.

Tiffin took its first possession after the AU score and marched 75 yards down the field in 8 plays capped off by a 20-yard TD reception by Josh Lewis from Kason Martin that tied the score 7-7.

After a three-and-out by the Eagles, TU struck again. This time Martin hit Devin Nelson on a 24-yard strike with 42 seconds left in the first quarter to go ahead 14-7.

The game remained close until midway through the second quarter. TU took advantage of good field position, starting at its own 46-yard line and marching downfield before Lewis got his second TD reception on a 16-yard route from Martin with 5:26 left in the half.

Tiffin's defense continued to make a statement, forcing a punt after another three-and-out as TU looked to close out the half with another score. Martin led the offense down the field, with Nelson also getting yards on the ground before Martin pushed the ball over the goal line pile with just 13 seconds left in the half. TU entered the halftime break with a big 28-7 lead.

TU had racked up nearly 300 yards of offense in the first half while holding the Eagles to just 125. They also held Ashland to just 1 for 6 on third-down conversions.

Ashland tried to mount a comeback coming out of the halftime break. They took their opening possession and marched 62 yards before scoring on a 14-yard pass to make the score 28-13.

TU took just two plays to respond on its next drive. Ronald Blackman exploded around left end on a big 63-yard touchdown run that pushed the Dragons' lead to 35-13.

Ashland scored again on its next possession, booting a 41-yard field goal, but it was the Eagles' defense that needed to make stops to give AU a chance to catch up. The Dragons were not about to accommodate the Eagles, as again they responded. Blackman had another big 34-yard run setting up a 6-yard TD run by Tyrese Banks-Dorn as TU pushed its lead to 42-16.

TU and the Eagles continued to trade scores as the Dragons kept the clock running. Martin found Cole Schnieder on an 18-yard TD strike to start the fourth quarter and then engineered a nearly 7:00 drive at the end of the quarter with Banks-Dorn pounding the ball up the middle before streaking down the home sideline on a 17-yard run with 1:59 left on the clock to make the final score 55-30.

Overall TU had another massive offensive day, racking up 548 yards with a balanced attack. The Dragons had 280 through the air and 268 on the ground. They also had 32 first downs to Ashland's 19.

Neither team had any turnovers, but the Dragons converted 7 of its 10 third-down conversions while holding AU to just 3 for 12.
