The Tiffin University volleyball team fell on Friday afternoon, to the 22nd ranked team in the nation. The Lakers of Grand Valley State took care of business in three sets.
Tiffin led by as many as four points in the first set, but the Lakers woke up, and reeled off six straight points to regain the lead at 12-10. The remainder of the set went back and forth, with neither team able to shake the other, but with the score tied at 22, the Lakers were able to win three of the next four points to win the set 25-23
In set two, the Dragons continued to make life difficult for Grand Valley. Tiffin trailed the whole game, and at one point got behind by five points, but the Dragons showed great resiliency by fighting back to tie the score at 24-24. Tiffin continued to fight but could never take the lead, and ultimately they would fall in set two 28-26.
In the third set, it was all Grand Valley, hitting at a .615 clip with 17 kills. The Lakers also made only one attack error in 26 attempts. Meanwhile, the Dragons racked up 12 kills in the set, but committed four attack errors. The Lakers, ahead 14-11, flexed their muscle and bolted out on a 11-4 run to end the contest with a 25-15 third set win.
For the Dragons, Amanda Curry led the charge with 12 kills and a .423 hitting percentage. Olivia Cobb added 10 kills, and Kasey Adelsperger recorded 10 kills and made only three errors in 20 attempts. Emily Weithman added 37 assists and 13 digs, and Taylor Lattimore had another good defensive game, with 25 digs.
The loss drops Tiffin to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in GLIAC play. The Dragons will be back on the road next weekend as they head back to Michigan to take on the Lake Superior State Lakers and Northwood University Timberwolves.
