Tiffin University (5-3, 4-3 GLIAC) expected Hillsdale to feature a heavy rushing attack, but knowing it is coming and stopping it proved to be two different things, as the Chargers amassed 324 rushing yards en route to a 38-24 upset of the Dragons.
Hillsdale seemed to have Tiffin's number throughout the game, totaling 478 yards of total offense and averaging 6.2 yards per carry. Running back Joe Reverman had a massive game, rushing 38 times sfor 276 yards. The rushing attack also led the Chargers to 10 for 16 on third down conversions and a 10 minute edge in time of possession (34:15 to 24:31).
Tiffin led 14-7 at the half, with Antonio Pipkin tossing two touchdowns to Tony Shead on a 3 yard pass and Pedro Correa III on a 29 yard pass, all in the second quarter. Despite the effective rushing attack, the Dragons held the Chargers to just 7 first half points.
Then the second half started.
Pipkin threw his lone interception of the game on the first play of the half, leading to a Hillsdale TD at 13:09. Hillsdale then scored again on a 39 yard pass play at 9:12 and tacked on a 25 yard field goal at 4:16 of the third quarter.
Tomislav Derezic responded with a 25 yard field goal of his own to keep TU close but the ground game continued to pay off for the Chargers. A 7 yard TD pass from Hillsdale with 12:27 to play had the Dragons on the edge, but TU responded as Charles Holland made a sensational 37 yard touchdown reception from Pipkin on 4th and 7 to pull TU to within 7 points.
The Dragons could get no closer, though, as Hillsdale put the game away for good with another score with 3:11 to play.
TU was outgained overall 478-401, including a 324-99 advantage on the ground. The Dragons converted just 4 of 14 third down opportunities.
Pipkin finished 22 of 43 for 302 yards with 1 interception and 3 touchdowns. Jerry Brown rushed for 78 yards and had 42 yards receiving to total 120 yards of total offense, while Correa had 88 yards, Shead had 67 yards, Holland had 53 yards, and Jalen Santoro had 52 yards receiving.
