The Tiffin University volleyball team fell to the Michigan Tech Huskies Friday night 3-1. It looked to be a promising evening for Tiffin, winning the 1st set, but the Huskies reeled off three straight set wins.
In set one, the Dragons led early, but allowed Tech to regain the lead at 15-10. With the Huskies leading 19-15, it looked like TU would fall a set down, but the Dragons went on a 10-4 run to steal the set and a 1-0 lead. Tiffin hit at a .250 mark with 13 kills. Michigan Tech made 9 attack errors in the set and hit at only .135.
The Huskies rebounded in set two, as they built a large lead and ran away from the Dragons 25-15. In that set, MTU hit at a whopping .469 clip and made only two attack errors.
Set three went back and forth, as TU and MTU traded punches. The Huskies held a slight lead throughout the first part of the set, but Tiffin rallied to tie the score at 15-15. From that point on, neither team led by more than three points. Tiffin, trailing 24-21, on the brink of losing the set, rattled off three points to force a Tech timeout. With the score tied at 24-24, the Huskies made their move en route to a 26-24 set three win.
Set four was nothing different, as the Dragons dug a hole for themselves, trailing 5-1, but managed to climb out using a 15-5 run to lead 16-10. The Huskies were down but not out, mounting their comeback, and ending the game on a 15-3 scamper to victory, 25-19. The Dragons had the Huskies right where they wanted them, but couldn't finish them as Tiffin converted only six kills in the set.
Offensively, Amanda Curry led the way for the Dragons, collecting 11 kills and hitting .348 for the match. Victoria Turnbough had a good game on both sides of the net for Tiffin, smashing 9 kills and denying the Huskies' attack four times. Emily Weithman had 38 assists and two kills, while Kasey Adelsperger added 8 kills and assisted in three blocks.
The loss drops the Dragons to 9-11 overall and an even 5-5 in GLIAC play. They will look to get back on the right side of the scoreboard tomorrow as they host the Northern Michigan Wildcats at 2:00 p.m..
