Second quarter breakdowns spelled doom for Tiffin University's football team in their 2014 season opener at Walsh, as the Dragons allowed 17 points in the quarter to fall behind 24-0 at the half en route to a 45-10 loss.
The Dragons' offense could not get in sync all day, as they were outgained 504-192 in total offense, including a 268-103 margin at halftime. Walsh also totaled 23 first downs to TU's 11.
Walsh scored on a 3-yard run at the 9:34 mark of the first quarter to open scoring, but they got rolling in the second quarter. After a 47 yard field goal at the 11:37 mark, Walsh connected on two scoring passes covering 12 and 36 yards at the 7:59 and 4:46 marks to take a big 24-0 lead at the intermission.
Walsh added two more scores in the third quarter on a 30 yard run and a 3 yard scamper before TU got on the board at the :17 mark of the third quarter on Tomaslav Derezic's 30 yard field goal.
TU's Carlton Watkins picked off a Walsh pass at the 14:34 mark of the final period and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown in the TU's biggest highlight of the day. Walsh then capped off the scoring at the 8:22 mark on a 2 yard run.
Antonio Pipkin completed 21 of 39 passes with one interception for 145 yards while also leading the team with 28 yards rushing on 14 carries. Tyler Jones also had 73 yards receiving on 9 catches.
Defensively Watkins had 9 tackles with a score on his interception return, while Shawn Scott added 8 tackles. Keith Butts and Morgan Loyd had 6 stops, while Terry Harper and D.J. Edwards-Stewart had 5 tackles apiece.
