The Tiffin University Dragons women's volleyball team started off their season at home on a high note as they defeated Walsh University in four sets.
Against Walsh, the Dragons took the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-13. In the third set, the Lady Cavaliers fought back. They were led by freshman Gina Kramer who tallied a team-high 17 kills. Sophomore Liza Pflugradt brought strong energy in the third set and finished the game leading her team with three blocks. The Cavaliers took set three by a score of 25-18.
In the fourth and final set, the Dragons came back and took control, coasting to a 25-16 victory and winning the match 3 sets to 1.
Reigning GLIAC player of the week Lu Phillips (SR/Peoria, Ariz.) helped to lead an energetic Dragons squad to victory. Phillips, a senior, came into the contest averaging 4.3 kills per set. In four sets against Walsh she recorded 16 more kills. Phillips also pitched in with 12 digs.
Freshman Taylor Lattimore (FR/Maple Heights, Ohio) led Tiffin with 35 digs and was also among a group of four Dragons who had two service aces - Tiffany Buchinger (SR/Reese, Mich.), Sarah Haman (SR/Xenia, Ohio) and Chelsea Stockmeyer (SR/Reese, Mich.).
Buchinger also had 42 assists and did a nice job setting up the hitters on the team. Tiffin improved their record to 3-1 and tonight's victory marked the season's first match against a GLIAC opponent. The Dragons will be right back on their home floor tomorrow as they host Malone for a 2 PM GLIAC match.
