Tiffin Falls In Mighty Battle With Pioneers

CANTON, Ohio - Senior Danielle McQuade and Junior Lu Phillips had double-doubles as the Tiffin University volleyball team (5-1, 1-1 GLIAC) lost 3-1 (25-22, 19-22, 25-23, 25-23) to Malone (7-3, 2-0 GLIAC), Saturday afternoon at Osborne Hall.

In the opening set, Malone appeared to have things in hand with a 17-11 lead. Tiffin scored five straight points with a block by Phillips and junior Chelsea Stockmeyer making it 17-16.

The Pioneers moved back into the lead at 21-17. The Dragons made another run, this one 5-2. Senior Sabina Stadler ripped it down the line to make it 23-22. MU scored the next two points to take the set.

In the second set, Malone came out firing, jumping to an 8-2 lead. TU stormed back with a 15-5 run. That gave Tiffin the lead at 17-13.

Malone slowly got back into the game. A kill from Taylor Slauterbeck tied the set at 18-18. It was still in jeopardy with the Dragons leading 22-19. TU scored the next three points to even the match.

In the third set, both teams traded blows like a heavyweight championship bout. Tied at 19-19, Tiffin scored three straight points to lead 22-19. The Pioneers though closed with a 6-1 burst to take the set.

In the fourth set, MU appeared poised for victory with an 18-13 lead. Tiffin came back to tie the match at 21-21.

Malone went up 23-21, however the Dragons fought back. Phillips got a kill and a Pioneer error tied the set at 23-23. MU forced an error and got a kill from Elizabeth Maczuzak to end the match.

For Tiffin, Phillips had 18 kills, 15 digs and hit .316 while McQuade had 10 kills and 17 digs. It was Phillips' second double-double of the season and the fifth in a row for McQuade. Junior Tiffany Buchinger had 37 assists and 10 digs. Senior Jordan Jenkins had 23 digs, her 26th consecutive double-digit dig performance.

For Malone, Maczuzak and Slauterbeck had 12 kills each while Lauren Townley had 11 kills. Katie Hasebein had 18 digs.

Tiffin opens the home season, Friday, Sept. 27, taking on Northwood. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. Live Stats will be available at http://livestats.prestosports.com/tiffin/
