CLEARWATER, Fla. - Sophomore Nick Hueneburg and senior Ryan Williams had four hits each as the Tiffin University baseball team (6-7) swept Upper Iowa (6-5) 3-2 and 14-4, Thursday morning at Jack Russell Stadium.
In the third inning, senior Colin Sallee doubled and moved to third on a bunt single by senior Roger Christensen. A sacrifice fly by senior Ryan Locke scored Sallee to give Tiffin a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Williams singled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Senior Tayler Glass lined a single up the middle to score Williams. In the sixth inning, Upper Iowa scored twice to tie the game.
In the bottom of the eighth, Locke singled and was replaced by Anthony Dodds. A sacrifice bunt and a walk put Dodds on second and senior KC Weber at first. Williams singled to left field to score Dodds and end the game.
For Tiffin, Williams had three hits and Sallee had two. Senior Cody Dunn (2-0) gave up one hit and struck out one in two innings.
For Upper Iowa, Dan Cwertniak (0-1) gave up 10 hits, three runs, walked one and struck out three in 7.3 innings.
In the nightcap, freshman Cole McCurry singled through the left side. Hueneburg crushed a double to score McCurry. The Peacocks scored one in the second to knot the game at 1-1. The Dragons scored 11 runs in the fourth and fifth inning to seal the game.
For Tiffin, Hueneburg had three hits and drove in four runs with a double and a triple. Sophomore Nick Calandra, Locke and senior Jordan Stum had two hits each. Senior Tyler Glass (1-0) gave up two hits, one run, walked two and struck out one in three innings.
For Upper Iowa, Sam Kortes had two hits. Nick Tuttle (0-1) gave up seven hits, six runs, walked one and struck out one in 3.7 innings.
Tiffin will take on Benedict, Friday, March 15 in Columbia, S.C. The games are scheduled to start at noon.
