That 13 point free throw advantage also proved to be the exact margin of difference in the final score, as Tiffin University (5-2, 1-1 GLIAC) defeated Saginaw Valley State on the road 65-52 in a hard fought victory Saturday afternoon.
The Dragons, who played a solid first half that saw that enter the halftime lockerroom with a 30-18 lead, watched as the Cardinals stormed back in the second half.
An 8-0 run brought the Cardinals to within 5 points. Tiffin was unable to pull away from the Cardinals, holding a slim 4 point lead with 3:33 to play.
The Dragons then went on a 15-5 run over the next 3:00 to put the game away. All 15 points came from the charity stripe, as TU went 15 for 19 from the line over the game's final 3:30.
Overall neither team set the nets on fire, but the Dragons did manage to hold the Cardinals to just 33 percent from the floor. TU shot 38 percent but canned 22 of their 35 free throws, while Saginaw Valley State went just 9 for 19 from the line. TU also held a 49-43 edge in rebounding.
Joe Graessle led the team with 15 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals, while Khaleal McCormick had 12 points with 5 rebounds. Ashton Khan also totaled 12 points, while Jonathan Sutherlin had his best game yet this season with 8 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Boan also had 10 rebounds along with 4 points. Korab Imami also contributed 7 points.
