TIFFIN, Ohio - The Tiffin University volleyball team (11-13, 2-13 GLIAC) came to play in a heartbreaking 3-2 (25-19, 24-26, 16-25, 26-24, 15-9) loss to Ashland (20-6, 12-3 GLIAC), Friday night at the Gillmor Center.
In the first set, it went back and forth until 7-7. Tiffin went on a 5-2 run to take the lead at 12-9. A kill from junior Chelsea Stockmeyer made it 14-12, Dragons.
Ashland scored five straight points to take the lead at 17-14. Stockmeyer found the back corner to make it 17-15. The Eagles closed the set on an 8-4 run to win.
In the second set, the two squads traded blows in the early going. At 10-10, TU made a move with a 12-7 run to lead 22-17. Junior Tiffany Buchinger got a kill to make it 24-21.
Ashland came back on the serving of Alli Cudworth. She got a kill and hit two aces to make it 24-24. Stockmeyer stuffed Cudworth followed by an ace from junior Sarah Haman to take the set 26-24.
In the third set, the Eagles were just overwhelmed by Tiffin. The Dragons were everywhere getting out to a 15-10 lead. AU closed to 17-14 before TU scored six straight points to effectively end the set.
In the fourth set, Ashland came out fighting mad getting out to a 14-9 lead. Stockmeyer got a kill and served up five straight points to make it 15-9.
From there it was back and forth. Senior Danielle McQuade ripped one in the corner to make it 24-24. The Eagles got back-to-back kills to force a fifth set.
In the fifth set, the score was 6-5 before AU took charge. Ashland scored six straight points to end the match.
For Tiffin, McQuade had 18 kills and 12 digs, freshman Olivia Cobb had 11 kills and junior Ally Kohlhase had 10 kills and .533. Buchinger had 42 assists while sophomore Casey Volz had three aces. Senior Jordan Jenkins had 46 digs, her 44th double-digit dig match.
For Ashland, Cudworth had 25 kills and eight aces with Shelly DeHenning picking up 52 assists. Marci Zegarac had 24 digs.
