Tiffin University (1-1, 0-1 GLIAC) got off on the wrong foot in their GLIAC opener at Michigan Tech, spotting the Huskies 24 points en route to a 51-15 loss.
The Huskies scored on their second offensive play, hooking up for a 79 yard TD strike to make it 7-0 at the 11:13 mark of the first quarter. The Huskies benefited from great field position throughout the first half, returning a punt 28 yards for their next score at the 7:29 mark to make it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
After a 22 yard field goal, the Huskies took advantage of a TU fumble and scored again on the ensuing possession to make it 24-0 with 12:20 left in the first half. The Huskies took advantage of 2 fumbles and 3 sacks to shut down the TU offense for most of the half.
The Dragons finally got on the board at the 5:37 mark of the second quarter when James Capello hit Jeremy Armstrong on a big 42 yard pass, giving the Dragons a 24-7 halftime deficit to try and come back from.
The comeback was not to be, however, as the Huskies came out in the third quarter and put up 21 points.
The Dragons got another score with 13:00 left to play as Capello connected with Bertram Marks for his second TD toss of the day, this one covering 20 yards. Jeremy Ortiz's conversion made it 45-15.
The Huskies capped off the scoring by returning TU's third fumble for a 32 yard TD scamper.
Overall the Huskies outgained the Dragons 494-269 in total offense, including a mammoth 218-7 advantage on the ground. They held a 21-13 edge in first downs while also sacking Capello 7 times in the contest.
Capello connected on 25 of 40 passes for 262 yards and 2 touchdowns, with Armstrong being the prime beneficiary with 83 yards receiving on 4 catches. Obadiah Dykes had 54 yards on 7 receptions, Marcus Beaurem had 50 yards on 5 catches, and Marks finished with 43 yards on 3 catches.
Defensively Bryon McCorkle led the way with 11 tackles while Joseph Collard and Mike Virgin had 8 apiece. James Rainey also had 6 stops.
