TIFFIN, Ohio - Junior Jordan Jenkins tied the single-game school record with 50 digs as the Tiffin University volleyball team (4-4, 0-2 GLIAC) went down fighting 3-1 (25-23, 29-27, 21-25, 25-20) to Walsh (2-3, 1-0 GLIAC), Friday night at the Gillmor Center.
In the opening set, the two teams went back and forth until it was 13-12, Tiffin. Brittany Morris had two kills to highlight a five point run. That made it 17-13, Walsh.
Down 21-17, the Dragons went on a run of their own. Three kills and an error tied the set at 21-21. After trading points, junior Brooke Friesen slammed it home to make it 23-22, TU. For the Cavaliers, Paige Chandler tied it on a kill and two aces from Julianne O'Donnell ended the set.
In the second set, Tiffin raced out to an early 12-6 lead. WU responded with an 11-4 run. A service ace from Paige Chandler gave Walsh a 17-16 lead.
Freshman Casey Volz served up two points to put the Dragons on the edge of victory at 24-21. The Cavaliers scored three straight points to tie it. After that, three times TU had set point and couldn't finish. WU scored three straight points to end the set.
The third set was a war the entire way through. Neither team was really able to pull away. Up 18-17, Tiffin made a run. Senior Maureen Kurtz had a kill, there was a Walsh error and Friessen and Kurtz stuffed Krissy Sokol.
That made it 21-17, Dragons. The Cavaliers got a kill from Devin Hummel to close to 23-21. However kills from junior Danielle McQuade and sophomore Tiffany Buchinger gave TU the set.
The fourth set looked like TU was firmly in charge at 16-10. The Cavaliers went on a 12-2 run to effectively end the match.
McQuade had 20 kills while Kurtz tallied 16 kills with a .424 hitting percentage. Sophomore Tiffany Buchinger had 46 assists. Jenkins tied the school record set by Holly Morgan versus Heidelberg on Oct. 28, 2004.
For Walsh, Sokol had 16 kills while Morris had 14. O'Donnell had 14 kills, five aces and 18 digs. Hannah Duran had 53 assists and Emilee Muzechuk had 29 digs.
Tiffin hits the road, Friday, Sept. 21 taking on Northwood. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
