TIFFIN, Ohio - Senior Karl Finley and sophomore Joe Graessle combined for 53 points as the Tiffin University men's basketball team (11-13, 5-11 GLIAC) upset Findlay (16-6, 10-5 GLIAC) 77-74, Thursday night at the Gillmor Center. It was the first victory over the Oilers since the 1991-92 season.
"Everything came together tonight for us," said coach John Hill. "We went out and played hard for 40 minutes. The last three years, we have a bunch of tough close losses to Findlay. I'm pleased that our seniors, especially Travis (Spahr) and Keenan (Barlow), our three-year players, can go out on a high note like this."
Tiffin took the early lead at 9-5, five minutes into the contest. The Dragons went on a 17-11 run over the next minutes. That gave TU the lead 26-16 with 6:16 to go.
Findlay made a run of their own. Jack Smith had two buckets and Greg Kahlig scored on a jumper. The Oilers had cut the lead to four, 26-22 at the 4:59 mark. Tiffin then outscored UF17-8 the rest of the way to lead by 13 at the half.
Tiffin continued to control the tempo in the early part of the second half. The Dragons led 55-41 with 14:54 to go. Findlay then came fighting back with a 15-2 run. A three-pointer by Kahlig cut the margin to 57-56 at the 12:33 mark.
TU responded with a 9-1 burst closed out by a free throw from senior Keenan Barlow. That put Tiffin up, 66-57 with 7:58 to go. The Oilers countered that with a 9-1 run of their own to make it 67-66 with 5:31 to the go. The lead was never more than three the rest of the way.
With 2:55 to go, Kahlig buried a triple from the top of the arc. That gave UF its first lead since the 18:34 mark of the first half, 74-73. Barlow drove the lane, was fouled and hit both charity tosses to make it 75-74. The Dragons hit two free throws and then watched a trey by Brad Piehl bounce off the rim as time expired.
For Tiffin, Finley had 29 points and two steals while Graessle had 24 points with five 3-pointers. Barlow had 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists and senior Travis Spahr had eight rebounds.
For Findlay, Kahlig had 27 points, 10 rebounds and hit five triples while Kyle Caiola scored 17 points.
