TIFFIN, Ohio - Junior Jordan Jenkins had 30 digs as the Tiffin University volleyball team (5-10, 1-8 GLIAC) lost 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-21) to Saginaw Valley State (8-10, 4-5 GLIAC), Saturday afternoon at the Gillmor Center.
In the opening set, the two teams went back-and-forth like a heavyweight championship fight. Neither side could put the other one away. Down 21-19, Saginaw Valley State got kills from Morgan Eddy and Ashley Driscoll to tie it up.
Tiffin came up with a huge block to make it 22-21. Senior Maggie Betz served up three straight points to end the set.
In the second set, the Cardinals took charge from the opening serve. SVSU appeared to have things in hand with a 17-11 lead. The Dragons came storming back with five straight points to make it 17-16.
Saginaw Valley State ended the bleeding with a kill from Cyndi Wagner. TU picked up kills from Betz and senior Maureen Kurtz. That tied it up at 18-18. Following a timeout, the Cardinals closed on a 7-1 run to even the match out.
In the third set, the two squads went head to head once again. A service error tied the set at 8-8. SVSU scored five straight points and were never headed after that.
In the fourth set, it was another knock down drag out fight. Junior Danielle McQuade went cross court to tie it at 13-13. Once again another five point run by Saginaw Valley State put the match away.
Kurtz had 14 kills while McQuade had 10 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Tiffany Buchinger had 38 assists. Sophomore Rachel Reamer had 16 digs. Jenkins had two aces to go with her fifth straight 20+ dig performance.
For Saginaw Valley State, Makenzie Frodle had 17 kills and four blocks while Julia Thomas had 11 kills and 14 digs. Sam Breault had 43 assists and Brooke Tiller had 17 digs.
