HOUGHTON, Mich. - Junior Danielle McQuade had a double-double as the Tiffin University volleyball team (7-13, 1-9 GLIAC) lost a tough one 3-2 (25-20, 25-16, 14-25, 20-25, 15-13) to Michigan Tech (8-15, 3-7 GLIAC), Friday night.
In the first set, Tiffin roared out to an 8-4 lead. Michigan Tech came storming back with an 8-2 run. A Dragon error gave the Huskies a 12-10 lead.
It went back and forth until it was 17-15, MTU. Michigan Tech went on a 4-1 burst to make it 21-16 and was never headed.
In the second set, the Huskies raced out to an 13-9 lead and things looked down for TU. Then, senior Maureen Kurtz got a kill. This was followed by a block and a service ace by senior Maggie Betz to make it 13-12. MTU closed the set on a 12-4 run to go up 2-0.
In the third set, Tiffin was all over Michigan Tech early on. The Dragons staked out a 16-8 lead before the Huskies scored five straight points. That closed it to 16-13.
At 18-14, TU forced an error. Sophomore Rachel Reamer came in and served six straight points to give the set to Tiffin.
In the fourth set, MTU took an early 7-4 lead. The Dragons came back to tie it at 8-8. From there, the teams were trading points.
At 15-14, TU scored three straight points to try and put it away. Michigan Tech refused to quit and a kill from Aubrey Havlichek made it 21-19. Tiffin scored three in a row and finally forced a fifth set.
In the deciding set, the Dragons took an 11-9 lead and were close to victory. The Huskies finished with a 6-2 run to take the match.
For Tiffin, McQuade had 19 kills and 12 digs while freshman Alex Miglin had 11 kills and Kurtz had 10 kills. Sophomore Tiffany Buchinger led the offense with 50 assists and added 14 digs. Jenkins had 27 digs, her 13th double-digit performance of the season.
For Michigan Tech, Shelby Jones had 21 kills and 10 digs while Sylvie Rokosh had 17 kills. Madeline Haben had 52 assists with 19 digs.
