PAINESVILLE, Ohio -Senior Lindsay Heller had 18 digs as the Tiffin University volleyball team (7-21, 6-13 GLIAC) knocked off Lake Erie (3-22, 1-17 GLIAC) 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19), Saturday afternoon at the Osborne Center.
In the first set, Tiffin held the early advantage at 13-9. Lake Erie then went on a 12-5 run to pull ahead 21-18. Sophomore McKenzie Wright went cross court to make it 21-19. The Storm righted themselves and scored four straight points to take the set.
In the second set, the squads slugged it out early. The Dragons held the early lead at 8-7. Junior Maggie Betz put the ball away. That started an 11-4 run to make it 19-11, TU.
LEC refused to drop the sails. It reeled off five straight points finished by a spike from Jamie Hoppe. That closed the gap to three, 19-16. Tiffin went on a 6-4 run, closing the set on a kill from Betz.
In the third set, it was another battle early on. Molly Richardson put the ball away to make it 9-7, Dragons. TU then exploded with a 9-3 spurt to put the set away.
In the fourth set, Tiffin could not put Lake Erie away. The Storm forced a service error to make it 10-9, Dragons. TU used two aces from Wright to score five straight points to finally seal the match.
For Tiffin, Betz, junior Maureen Kurtz, sophomore Danielle McQuade and freshman Erin Turner had seven kills each. McQuade added 16 digs while freshman Tiffany Buchinger and sophomore Jordan Jenkins had three aces each. Heller finished with 1604 career digs, the first player in school NCAA Division II history to reach that mark.
For Lake Erie, Richardson had 14 kills and Destiny Prusky tallied 11 kills.
Tiffin has concluded the 2011 season.
