TIFFIN, Ohio - Sophomore Danielle McQuade had 13 kills and 10 digs as the Tiffin University volleyball team (5-18, 4-10 GLIAC) lost 3-0 (28-26, 25-20, 25-14) to Saginaw Valley State (14-8, 12-3 GLIAC), Friday evening at the Gillmor Center.
In the first set, Saginaw Valley took the early 10-5. Tiffin went on a 7-2 run, forcing an error to make it 12-12.
The teams traded points until it was 15-15. The Dragons responded with an 8-2 run. A block from juniors Maggie Betz and Maureen Kurtz gave TU the lead 23-17.
The Cardinals came back with six straight points. SVSU forced an error to tie the match at 23-23. Kills from sophomore McKenzie Wright and freshman Erin Turner put Tiffin one point away from the win.
Saginaw Valley would counter each time. The Cardinals went up 26-25 but Kurtz slammed one home to make it 26-26. SVSU scored the next two points to take the set.
In the second set, Saginaw Valley took the early 10-4 lead. The Dragons went on a 6-2 tear. Kurtz smashed one off the block to close the gap to 12-10.
The Cardinals scored three straight points to make it 15-10. TU refused to quit, pulling out a 7-5 run. Kurtz dinked the ball over the net to make it 20-17. SVSU closed on a 5-3 run to take the set.
In the third set, the two squads battled back and forth until 4-4. Saginaw Valley went on a 13-4 run to close out the match.
For Tiffin, McQuade had her 11th double-double of the season, seventh in a row while Turner had three service aces. Senior Lindsay Heller had 16 digs, giving her 1533 in her career, ninth all-time in TU history. She needs 19 digs to pass Jody Dillinger (1552 - 1995-98) for eighth.
For Saginaw Valley State, Annie Buxton had 14 kills, Kelsey Feria had 12 and Katie Fitzgerald had 10 kills.
