Tiffin University and Mercyhurst College hooked up in a hot-shooting basketball game, with the Dragons pulling away in the second half for a 90-69 final score. The Dragons improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Lakers fall to 0-3.
Both teams were red hot from the floor in the first half, with Tiffin shooting 60 percent and Mercyhurst 55 percent. Both teams especially liked the three point arc, as they combined to hit 12 three pointers in the first 20 minutes.
Jennifer Johnston had a brilliant first half, burying all 6 field goals including 5 from three point land for 17 first half points. At the half, Tiffin held a narrow 44-40 lead.
The second half was a different story for the Lakers, who cooled off slightly from the floor as they dropped down to 43 percent shooting, but the Dragons actually improved their scalding shooting by blistering the nets at a 62 percent clip in the final 20 minutes.
The Dragons, who outscored Mercyhurst 46-29 after halftime, also turned up the defensive pressure, forcing the Lakers to commit 26 turnovers in the game while the Dragons committed only 12 miscues.
Tiffin started to take control of the game at the 18:29 mark of the second half. Leading by just three points, the Dragons put together a 19-7 run over the next seven minutes that ballooned their lead to 15 points. Another 8-2 run over the next 3:30 gave TU a 20 point lead which the Lakers could not manage to cut into.
Tiffin got a balanced offensive attack, as four players scored 14 or more points. Johnston led the way with 23 points, including 7 treys. Mandy Jaeb had 21 points and 5 assists, while Jessica Harris had 16 points with 10 rebounds for the double-double. Karli Mast added 14 points.
The Dragons controlled play inside, outscoring Mercyhurst 42-24 in the paint and also scoring 30 points off of turnovers.
The Dragons next take on Clarion University on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 6 pm.
