Tiffin University's women's basketball team started the 2010-11 season on the right foot, leading with a superb defensive effort while spreading the scoring around in a 67-42 win at Slippery Rock.
The Dragons opened the game with a solid offensive effort but top notch defense, shooting 41 percent overall but holding the Rock to just 12 points over a 15 minute period of the first half as they jumped out to a 37-21 halftime edge.
Tiffin's defense forced 22 SRU turnovers, registering 12 steals along the way, while offensively the Dragons handled the ball extremely well, committing only 7 turnovers. Tiffin also hit 7 three pointers in the game.
Trailing 5-4 early, the Dragons responded with a 30-12 run over the next 15 minutes to jump out to the big halftime lead. Coming out of the second half lockerroom, TU remained hot, immediately going on a 15-5 run to jump ahead by 27 and never looked back.
Nine different Dragons scored while 11 played 9 minutes or more in the game. Karli Mast led the way with 15 points followed by Jessica Harris with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Mandy Jaeb had 9 points with 6 rebounds, while Melissa Gilliland added 9 points, Deidra Brown had 8 points, and Jennifer Johnston had 7 points.
Tiffin now returns home this weekend for the Dragon Classic, taking on Alderson-Broaddus Friday night at 5:30 pm before taking on Mercyhurst at 4 pm on Saturday.
