Dragons' comeback effort falls just short

Tiffin University's football team wrapped up the 2010 season with a narrow 31-24 loss to 14th-ranked Hillsdale, nearly coming back with 21 fourth quarter points before falling in the closing seconds.

The Dragons defense played tough during a close first half, not allowing any first quarter points before the Chargers finally broke through for 17 points in the second quarter. Hillsdale led at the half 17-0.

Mike Rutkowski got TU on the board at 12:13 of the third quarter, drilling a 37 yard field goal to make it 17-3.

Hillsdale tacked 14 more points on the scoreboard before the end of the third quarter, taking a comfortable 31-3 lead into the fourth quarter. But Tiffin was not ready to concede the game just yet.

Jason Young completed a 6-play, 69 yard drive at 13:48 of the fourth quarter by running in the score from 1-yard out to make it 31-10. He continued his solid day by hooking up with David Singleton on an 80 yard bomb at 4:17 to bring TU to within 14 points at 31-17.

The Dragons got to within one score when Brendton Williams grabbed a 34 yard pass from Young, capping a 7 play, 96 yard drive with 54 seconds left to make the score 31-24. The game then came down to TU recovering the onside kick, but Hillsdale picked up the short kick and then ran out the clock.

Overall Hillsdale outgained TU 500-371 and 33-14 in first downs. TU had success with the pass throughout the day, as Young finished with 279 yards on 14 of 26 passing and no interceptions, passing for 2 TDs and rushing for another.

Singleton had 178 all-purpose yards, including 115 yards receiving on 6 catches. Trey Williams completed his Dragons career with 86 yards on 5 catches, while Brendton Williams had 95 yards receiving on 3 catches.

Defensively Chase Barnes posted 16 tackles while Logan Snell had 9, Joseph Collard had 8, and Anthony Thomas, Vincent Noble, and AJ Brewer had 7 tackles each. Mike Virgin also had 6 tackles with another interception, his team-leading 5th of the season.
