TIFFIN, Ohio - The Dragons took advantage of a two-on-two breakaway near the end of the first half and netted an insurance goal in the second as Tiffin (5-3-1, 4-2-1) defeated Findlay (4-3-2, 4-3 GLIAC) 2-0 Sunday afternoon.
Tiffin outshot Findlay 13-4, including 10-2 in shots on goal. Individually, Satu Hermunen and Jenna Hornyak added goals for the Dragons. Tiffin goalie Denise Resende grabbed both shots faced and improved to 4-2-1 on the season.
For Findlay, Amanda Bachmayer recorded a pair of shots. Alicia Tutino grabbed seven saves on nine shots faced and falls to 4-3-1 for the season. The Oilers added one defensive save for the game.
While most of the first half was played with both teams trying to set up their respective offenses in the gusty wind, Tiffin managed a goal right before half to take a 1-0 halftime advantage. On a two-on-two breakaway, Alex Sevastakis crossed the ball from the left side to Hornyak, who found the back of the in the 44th minute. It was Hornyak's fifth goal of the year.
In the first period, Tiffin outshot Findlay 5-1, including 4-1 in shots on target.
For the second half, the Dragons added a perfect through ball to take a 2-0 lead. In the 67th minute, Shelly Rogers threaded a pass through the defense to find Hermunen. Hermunen's shot went right of the Findlay goalie, off the right post that bounced in the goal for her first score of the year.
The Dragons had a golden opportunity to extend the lead even further in the game's last five minutes, but the Findlay defense was in the right place at the right time. Erin Thomas put a shot on target from five yards out in the box on the right side, but an Oilers player knocked the ball away just before it crossed the line to keep Tiffin's advantage at two goals.
Tiffin returns to action next Friday (Oct. 8) when it travels to the upper peninsula of Michigan to take on Michigan Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
