HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Chargers showed why they are the 10th-ranked team in the nation as Hillsdale (21-1, 15-0 GLIAC) defeated Tiffin (11-12, 7-6 GLIAC) in the rare midweek Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup Tuesday (Oct. 26) in Hillsdale, Mich.
Tiffin out-blocked Hillsdale 6-5 while the Chargers outhit the Dragons .255-.067. Danielle McQuade led TU with 10 kills while Jessica Adams added 22 assists. Lindsay Heller led the team with nine digs.
Hillsdale's Ashlee Crowder had a match-high 11 kills while Apryl Schmucker nearly missed a double-double with 33 assists and eight digs. Sydney Dow paced the Chargers with 16 digs.
The first set saw Hillsdale jump out to a 19-9 lead, but an 8-2 run pushed the Dragons within four. Down by 10, a Giavanna DiPietro kill put Jordan Jenkins on serve. Two Hillsdale errors and a Jenkins kill later, Tiffin was within six at 19-13. A kill and a Dragon attack error pushed the deficit to eight, but a Hillsdale service error allowed Brooke Bernabei to go on a service run of her own. First, Brittany Teaford and McQuade teamed up to provide a double block to cut it to six. Bernabei added an ace and a McQuade kill brought Tiffin within 21-17. However, the Dragons were unable to get any closer in the first set as they lost by five.
Tiffin fell behind 5-1 in the second set before a rally brought them within two at 11-9. Hillsdale tallied eight of the next nine points and the two teams split the final six points as Hillsdale won the set by nine.
The third set was the second-straight frame the Chargers jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Tiffin fought back to pull within 7-6. Up 13-10 later in the set, Hillsdale went on a 6-0 run thanks to five Tiffin errors and went on to win the finale 25-19.
Tiffin returns to action this weekend when it travels to Michigan for a trio of matches. The Dragons take on Grand Valley State Friday (Oct. 29) at 7 p.m. while taking on Ferris State on Saturday and Saginaw Valley State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
