MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Tiffin University men's tennis team turned in a strong showing at the rain-shortened Allegheny Invitational on Sunday, collecting numerous singles and doubles victories against a competitive field in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The tournament was condensed into a single day after Saturday's action was canceled due to rain, with Sunday's play also ending early because of weather.
The Dragons were particularly impressive in singles competition, led by
Harry Senior,
Juan Castro,
Luka Gilbert, and
Samuel Rossi, who each recorded multiple victories. Senior opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Enrique Margain of Oberlin before dominating Jonah Jasek of Washington & Jefferson 6-0, 6-1.
Castro also posted a perfect day, defeating Vinny Cannata of Baldwin Wallace 6-2, 6-2 before earning a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Luis Espla of Allegheny.
Gilbert battled through a pair of tough contests, rallying for a 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-7 win over Logan Memije before adding a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 triumph against Levente Mihaly of Allegheny. Rossi earned a comeback victory over Ollie Fletcher of Juniata, winning 3-6, 7-5, 10-4, and later held a lead against Thomas Ishikawa of Wooster when play was halted due to weather.
Additional singles victories came from
Martin Driesner, who opened the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dash Smith of Oberlin,
Jose Pinto, who defeated Anthony VanOyen of Wooster 6-3, 6-4,
Max Westall, who outlasted Oberlin's Zain Makada 6-4, 2-6, 10-2,
Nicolas Pierre, who defeated Ian Royse 6-2, 6-2, and
Emile Laflamme, who earned a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Martin Hauschild.
Tom Van Nooten also secured a 6-0, 6-3 win against Santiago Medina.
In doubles action, the Dragons continued their strong play with several teams collecting wins. Driesner and Senior opened with a dominant 6-1 victory over Oberlin's Margain and Cameron Weiss, while Pinto and Westall defeated Wooster's Hauschild and VanOyen 6-2. Gilbert and Pierre earned wins over teams from Oberlin and Wooster, while Pinto teamed with both
Marlon Huber and Driesner for additional victories later in the day.
Other doubles winners for Tiffin included Senior and Pinto,
Lorenzo Galeno and Pierre, Van Nooten and Senior, Huber and Gilbert, Huber and Pierre, and
Caden Elchert and Laflamme.
The doubles matches were played at Oberlin against the Ohio squads. Tiffin will return to action on Saturday, September 26 competing in the Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational at the University of Toledo.
