Tiffin University boasted three region champions along with another NCAA National Championships qualifier, finishing 3rd of 12 teams at the NCAA Super Region III championships.
Anthony Aniciete (125 pounds),
Nolan Gessler (165), and
Emilio Arellano (174) all won region titles, while
Jake Powell (285) placed 3rd to land berths at the NCAA National Championships.
Overall Glenville State edged out Grand Valley State for the region title 135-131. Tiffin had 117 points, just ahead of West Liberty's 116.5. Ashland was 5th with 103.
Aniciete won his title with dramatic victories by narrow margins. He won the title by defeating West Liberty in a slim 8-7 decision. He also posted wins over Salem 21-5 and Glenville State 2-1.
Gessler also got three wins for his title. He beat Bluefield State 15-0, then edged out Ashland 4-1 before winning the title 7-0 over Glenville State.
Arellano opened with a strong 18-2 win over Davenport and then won epic battles over Ashland 2-0 and Grand Valley State 4-1 in sudden victory for the title.
Jake Powell (285) also finished third. He beat Bluefield State by pin in 1:14, then pinned Davenport in 2:23. After losing to West Liberty 7-2, he pinned Findlay by fall in 2:15 to land a nationals berth.
Two Dragons just missed national berths with 4th place finishes.
David Davis (184) pinned Davenport in 2:14, fell to Ashland 4-2, then beat Findlay by injury default. He fell in the 3rd place match by a slim 8-6 score to GVSU.
Max Millin (197) posted a 13-6 decision over Salem, then lost 11-2 to Glenville State before beating Findlay 12-2 in his next bout. He was pinned by GVSU in 6:44 in the 3rd place match.Â
Bret Minnick (141) finished 5th. He had wins over Salem 6-5, Bluefield State by pin in 1:40, Davis & Elkins by an 8-3 margin, and finally over Grand Valley State 4-0.
Also finishing 5th was
Casey Barnett. He had wins over Salem by fall in 24 seconds and Bluefield State in 34 seconds. His final win came against Findlay by medical forfeit.
