Box Score Tiffin University (1-0) handled Wayne State on both sides of the ball, opening the game with 20 unanswered points en route to a strong 34-7 win on the road.
The Dragons drove 63 yards on their opening possession, reaching the Wayne State 1-yard line. Though a subsequent fumble ended the drive, the offensive efficiency set the tone for what was to come.
Tiffin took its next possession and put together a massive 16-play, 85-yard drive covering 11:12 that ended with a 7-yard TD pass from
Alex Johnson to
Ethan Holbrook to put TU up 7-0.
The Dragons' defense continued to give the offense plenty of opportunities in the first half, allowing just one first down to the Warriors before halftime. Tiffin took advantage of great field position at the Wayne State 40-yard line to put points on the board in its next possession, with
Ben Rudolph booting a 24-yard field goal as TU moved to a 10-0 lead.
After another three-and-out by the TU defense, the special teams got in on the action. Holbrook returned a punt 80 yards for a score on an electrifying run, catching the ball near the home sideline and crossing the field, streaking down the visitor sideline before cutting between blockers and defenders to reach the end zone.Â
With the first half winding down, a sack by
Uzonna Nzekwe led to a fumble recovered by
Gio Albanese at the Wayne State 38-yard line with 20 seconds left. Two pass completions covering 26 yards by Johnson gave Rudolph to kick a 30-yard field goal as time expired to put the Dragons ahead 20-0 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, Wayne State finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter after a 75-yard drive to make it 20-7. The Dragons responded immediately with a 65-yard drive ending with a 3-yard run by
Tyrese Banks-Dorn as TU pulled back ahead 27-7.
Tiffin finished the scoring on its next possession, putting a commanding 70-yard drive together that ended with an 11-yard TD toss to Holbrook.
Overall Tiffin outgained the Warriors 385-135 including 253-53 through the air. They held a 21-9 edge in first downs The defense also excelled with 4 sacks and held Wayne State to just 2-for-11 on third downs.
Holbrook and
Ronald Blackman had strong all-purpose games. Holbrook finished with 79 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns while also totaling 92 yards in punt returns with another score for 168 all-purpose yards. Blackman, meanwhile, led TU rushers with 82 yards while finishing with 153 all-purpose yards after gaining 40 yards receiving and 31 yards on kick returns.Â
Will Jackson-Linkhart had 57 yards receiving while
Emari White added 48 more receiving yards. Johnson completed 22 of 28 passes for 253 yards with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions.
Jacob Tueimeh led the defense with 6 tackles, while
Khris Walton,
Kevin Hornbeak, Nzekwe, and
Kris Artis all had sacks.Â
