Tiffin University men's basketball (7-21, 5-15 G-MAC) concluded their season with an 85-78 home loss to Northwood on Saturday afternoon at the Gillmor Center.
It was senior day for the Dragons and prior to the game, Allen Fordham, Marcus Stewart, DJ Gooden, John Muhammad, and Dekyre Fuller were all recognized.
The Timberwolves started the game with a free throw and on the Dragons' ensuing possession, Marcus Stewart hit a three to give Tiffin a 3-1 lead. Tiffin's lead lasted just 58 seconds as Northwood went on a 10-0 run to lead 11-3. The Timberwolves would lead for the rest of the game.
The Dragons struggled offensively in the first half, converting on just 9 of 27 attempts for 33.3 percent while the Timberwolves shot 55 percent (16 of 29). Northwood led 45-30 at halftime.
The Dragons appeared to have some momentum going early in the second half. Back-to-back baskets by Muhammad and Caleb Bates cut the deficit to 11, 51-40, with 15:34 remaining. On Northwood's next possession, D'monyae Davis was called for a foul and then given a technical which led to a 7-0 run to give Northwood their biggest lead of the game, 18, with 14:35 remaining.
A bucket by Fuller with 2:50 remaining finally cut the lead to single digits making it 76-67. The Dragons still had life as a layup by Michael Lucarotti made it a seven-point game, 83-76 with 51 second remaining. Tiffin then had an opportunity to make things very interesting as Northwood turned it over on their inbounds pass and Lucarotti came away with the ball, but he was unable to convert his three-pointer that would've made it a four-point game with 45 seconds remaining.
In the final 1:42, Northwood converted eight of their 10 free throw attempts.
The Dragons, who had been solid from the free throw all year, struggled today shooting 18 of 29 for 62 percent. The Timberwolves meanwhile were 21 of 27 for 77 percent.
The Timberwolves outrebounded the Dragons 43-19. The Dragons forced 23 turnovers but could only score 21 points off the NU miscues.
Gooden led the team in scoring with 18 and grabbed four rebounds. Fuller finished with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks. Fordham and 12 points and KJ Pruitt added 10 points, three assists, and three steals. Muhammad had eight points, three rebounds, and two steals.
The seniors combined for 55 of the team's 78 points.
