Tiffin sends four grapplers to NCAA National Championships

Tiffin University is sending four wrestlers to the NCAA National Championships following action at the Super Region 3 Championships hosted in the Heminger Center.

Overall Tiffin finished 5th of 12 teams. Glenville State won the region with 129 points followed by Ashland and Grand Valley State with 126.5. Tiffin (102.5) also trailed West Liberty (116) in a very competitive regional battle.

Tiffin had two individual champions. Anthony Aniciete won the 125-pound title while Casey Barnett also dominated at 157.

Nolan Gessler (165) was runner-up and Max Shore (133) also earned a nationals trip with a 3rd-place finish.

Aniciete dominated early and then won two close bouts to secure the title. He had a tech fall 16-0 win over Davenport and another 20-3 tech fall win over Emory & Henry. He then landed the nationals berth with a slim 4-1 win over Glenville State and took the title with a 4-2 win over Ashland.

Barnett picked up a win by fall in 2:26 over Salem and then clipped Ashland 3-0 and Glenville State 8-2 for his title.

Gessler opened with a 14-3 major decision over Davenport and then edged past Grand Valley State 4-2. After winning 15-0 over West Liberty, he narrowly fell to Lake Erie in the title match 6-2.

Shore earned his nationals spot the hard way. He opend with big wins over Salem by fall in 2:06 and 21-6 over Emory & Henry. He then fell by narrow margin 9-8 to West Liberty. He needed to win his final two matches to get the nod and he did it in impressive fashion, winning by tech fall 20-2 over Glenville State and by major decision 13-5 over Grand Valley State.

David Davis (184) placed 5th. He had wins over Davenport by fall in 5:42 and then won his fifth-place match over Lake Erie 7-2.

Lucas Salmon (197) also took 5th, getting wins over Lake Erie by fall in 2:26 and over Davenport by major decision 11-0.

Tiffin had two other placers. Jake Powell (285) beat Bluefield State 10-6 while also getting two byes, and Cael Woods (141) got wins over Davis & Elkins 5-2 and Emory & Henry by fall in 49 seconds.

Other Dragons getting wins were Bret Minnick (13-3 over Lake Erie) at 149.
