Tiffin University had six placers at the Midwest Classic, including the 165-pound champion in
Nolan Gessler.
Overall Tiffin finished tied for fourth of 47 teams. Parkside won the event with 150 points followed by Pitt-Johnstown with 132 and Central Oklahoma with 113. Tiffin and Gannon tied with 109.5 points.
Gessler, who was named Most Outstanding Wrestler, was the lone champion for Tiffin. He picked up three more wins on day two, beating Gannon 5-2 and Parkside 6-4 before defeating two-time national champion David Hunsberger of Lander in the title bout 10-3.
Casey Barnett (157) took third overall. He opened day two with a pin in 1:51 over UNC Pembroke but then lost by a narrow 6-5 score to Parkside. He bounced back to defeat Seton Hill 1-0 and West Liberty by medical forfeit.
Anthony Aniciete (125) defeated Gannon 4-2 but then fell 12-3 to Parkside. After bouncing back to beat Chadron State 4-2, he then fell by pin in 2:50 to Adams State.
Jake Powell (285) came in with a 5th place finish. After falling 11-3 to Pitt-Johnstown, he bounced back with wins against East Stroudsburg 16-0 and Newman 14-5. Indianapolis then pinned him in 4:13 but Powell finished with a win in the 5th-place bout over Ashland 14-5.
David Davis (184) took seventh. He lost in a close one 4-2 to Chadron State but then beat Pitt-Johnstown 5-2. Another close one went against Davis, this time 4-1 to Parkside, but he finished with a win over East Stroudsburg in the 7th-place match 12-5.
Tiffin's final placer was
Emilio Arellano at 174 pounds. He took 8th with wins against Gannon 12-6 and Upper Iowa by medical forfeit. He also lost two close matches to King 12-10 and Pitt-Johnstown 8-4.
