The Tiffin University Women's Tennis team took on the Walsh Cavaliers Saturday in their home opener in the GLIAC, posting an 8-1 victory.
TU swept doubles 3-0 after dominating wins at 2nd and 3rd with a close victory at 1st doubles. TU went up 2-0 as 2nd and 3rd doubles finished close to the same time, posting 8-4 and 8-1 victories respectively.
TU's Mazzola and Avram had a close match early, but managed to pull away midway through the set with a few clutch breaks to seal the deal. Avram's explosive play helped propel the junior/senior combo to a decisive 8-3 victory. 3rd Doubles saw similar play as Harpaintner and Musina powered through their doubles match 8-1. Harpaintner came away with a few aces under her belt as the duo simply overpowered the Cavaliers. The closest match for the Dragons came at 1st doubles where a roller coaster of scores and emotion propelled TU to an 8-6 victory. TU led early 5-1 before relinquishing the lead and losing 5 straight games. TU was able to get back on track, finishing with 3 games in a row of their own to complete the set. The Dragons went from aggressive to passive then back to aggressive to finish off the set and complete a clean 3-0 sweep in doubles, the first time the team has done that this season.
TU continued their winning ways in singles, but it wasn't easy. TU played several close 3 set matches as they defeated Walsh. 1st Singles saw Nelhage won in dramatic fashion winning 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), while 2nd singles saw a close defeat where Mazzola lost 0-6, 6-3, 2-6. 3rd Singles saw a dominating win by Adel Musina 6-0, 6-1, continuing her singles streak and showing why she is the reigning GLIAC player of the week. 4th singles was another close victory for TU as they won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. 5th and 6th Singles were won by TU as well where Avram won at 5th singles by a score of 6-3, 7-5 and Kaye won 6-0, 6-4.
