Dragons beat Lakers in big GLIAC match

Tiffin University (14-1, 11-1 GLIAC) continued their record-setting season, beating 45th-ranked Grand Valley State for the first time in school history 6-3 at the PM Gillmor Courts. The Lakers were also the third ranked team in the Midwest Region (ITA).

The Dragons got off on the right foot by sweeping the doubles matches in three nailbiters. Malaika Messi/Valentina Mazzola and Caroline Nelhage/Chelsea Beck both won in narrow 8-6 contests, while Abigail Schuster/Rachelmary Brozovich battled back from 7-4 down to win 9-7 and give TU a 3-0 lead heading to singles play.

The Dragons then proceeded to win the top three singles matches, with Mazzola and Nelhage both winning tough three set matches. Mazzola won 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 while Nelhage remained unbeaten on the season with a big 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory at second singles. Messi also won 6-1, 6-4.

Beck, Brozovich, and Schuster fell in singles matches, all in straight sets.

The Dragons, currently second in the GLIAC, will take on first-place Northwood Saturday, Oct. 12 at 9 am.
