TIFFIN, Ohio - Fresh off their 3-1 series win over Alderson Broaddus last weekend, Tiffin baseball will host Malone for a nonconference meeting on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
Despite both playing in the G-MAC, the game is designated as nonconference as the Pioneers are not part of the eight-team conference rotation that the Dragons are scheduled to face this season.
Since TU joined Division II, Tiffin and Malone have faced each other 18 times, with the Pioneers holding an 11-7 edge in the series. This will be their third meeting this year, as the two teams split the previous matchups with Malone taking a 14-4 win on Mar. 2 in Florida and Tiffin earning a 4-3 victory on Mar. 19 in Massillon.
The Dragons are on a roll, as they have won six of their last seven games and 10 of their last 15. With a 9-9 record, TU now sits seventh in the GMAC with 14 conference games to play and the top eight making the postseason tournament. The playoff race is an extremely tight one, as spots three through nine are currently separated by just two games in the standings.
Zach Campbell continues to rake for Tiffin, upping his batting average to .400 (fourth in the GMAC) after the weekend. He also leads the conference with 13 doubles, is sixth with 40 hits, and tied for eighth with a .600 slugging percentage. Not to be outdone, John Heckman comes into Wednesday third in the conference in doubles (12), fourth in hits (41), tied for fifth in home runs (5), sixth in RBI (32), and tied for eighth in slugging percentage (.600). Nich Green is also fifth with a .494 on-base percentage, and Cody Orr is tied for second with three triples.
Orr also leads the team and is third in the GMAC in innings pitched with 46.2, while the sophomore holds a 2-0 record and a 6.90 ERA with 28 strikeouts. Freshman Tyler Wehrle is second on the team with 39.0 innings on the mound, and leads is tops among the Dragon starters with a 4.85 ERA while striking out 28.
Scouting the Pioneers:
After a four-game sweep of Findlay last weekend, Malone overtook Ohio Dominican for the top spot in the conference with a 14-4 GMAC record. The Pioneers are 14-1 since TU beat them on Mar. 19, with their only loss coming to Division I Kent State.
Malone has a very tough pitching staff, as the Pioneers lead the GMAC with a 3.30 team ERA that is an impressive .76 points lower than the next team. Tommy Walker has also had a lot of success on the mound, leading all starters in the conference with a 1.32 ERA, having allowed just six earned runs in 41.0 innings.
