What a way to open the GLIAC season.
Tiffin University (5-3, 1-0 GLIAC) upended 33rd-ranked Ferris State University 5-4, pulling out several close matches and getting their conference season off to a red hot start.
"The exciting thing about today's match was not the fact that we beat a great team," said Head Coach Phil Conley. "It is that we played well, but I know we can play even better. Having this young squad is very exciting. Captains Robbie Ball and Craig Martin, both seniors, are helping us get them focused and prepared for the GLIAC season."
Ferris State, ranked 4th in the Midwest Region, led 2-1 after doubles play. Ben Fievet/Jordan Simon-Chopard won 8-4, but Nicholas Almeida/Kyle Johnson dropped a close 8-5 decision while Robbie Ball/Agustin Mangone fell 8-6.
TU bounced back to win four of the singles matches. Ball won 6-2, 6-2 and Johnson also posted a straight set victory 6-4, 6-1. Mangone pulled out a narrow 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 victory, while Simon-Chopard also squeeked out a 6-4, 7-6 win.
Tiffin's two singles losses came in razor thin decisions. Fievet fell 5-7, 7-5, 7-6, while Almeida lost 7-6, 7-6.
