MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Ashley DeWitt and John Pemberton recorded the second best marks in the country (shot put) for the Tiffin University men's and women's track and field season at the Shamrock Invitational. TU had four NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifiers, 37 top 10 finishes, 35 additions to the top 10 list and broke three school records.
For the women, DeWitt threw the shot 47 feet, 0.75 inches, breaking the school record of 46 feet, 0.50 inches set by Kristi Ameling in 2009. She was the top NCAA Division II/III placer and fourth overall. Katie Gerhardt ending up winning the discus with a toss of 145 feet, eight inches. That is fifth longest in the country, hit the NCAA DII Provisional mark and broke the school record of 143 feet, three inches by Sara Riley in 2001.
The Dragons had two top finishers among NCAA D II/III competitors. Jessica Kern recorded the third fastest 1500 in school history at 4:47.29. Ashley Gilroy took the top spot in the 5000 with a time of 17:56.62. Marielle Segbor placed third in the triple jump at 37 feet, 10.75 inches. That broke the school record of 37 feet, 9.25 inches set last year by Kayla Ellks.
For the men, Pemberton tossed the shot 57 feet, 7.50 inches to place second overall and first among D II/III throwers. He was just 2.25 inches off his school record. Travis LeFlore hit the NCAA DII Provisional Standard with the sixth highest high jump at six feet, 8.75 inches.
Colin Fisher won the 5000 with a mark of 14:43.91. It is the second fastest time in school history, just four seconds off the school record.
Tiffin is back in action, Saturday, March 24 at the Emory Invite in Atlanta. The meet is scheduled to run all day.
