GENEVA, Ohio - The Tiffin University men's and women's track and field team made its presence known with a pair of second place finishes at the NCAA DII Challenge, Saturday. The Dragons had 35 top 10 finishes and 14 additions to the top 10 list while winning five events.
Men
Tiffin scored 64 points to place second behind #5 Ashland at 100 points. The Dragons finished ahead of three nationally ranked teams; #8 Findlay, #15 Lake Erie and #23 Lake Superior State.
Travis LeFlore cleared six feet, seven inches to win the high jump. The distance medley relay team ran 10:13.51 to claim top honors. Emmanual Grembo was runner-up in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.95.
Colin Fisher ran 8:35.79 to place third in the 3000. His time was the third fastest in TU history. John Pemberton placed third in the shot put with a toss of 50 feet, 2.75 inches.
Women
It was a dogfight as #5 Ashland edged the Dragons, 79.60 to 76 for first place. Like the men, TU placed ahead of three nationally ranked squads; #14 Hillsdale, #15 Findlay and #25 Concord.
Katherine Gerhardt won the shot put with a school record toss of 46 feet, 6.75 inches. Her put also hit the NCAA Division II Provisional mark and ranks among the top 10 in the country. Joining Gerhardt on the podium was Ashley DeWitt in the 20-LB weight (57 feet, 0.75 inches) and Meghan Gill in the high jump (five feet, 4.25 inches).
The Dragons picked up runner-up performances from DeWitt in the shot put (43 feet, 11.25 inches), Kayla Ellks in the long jump (18 feet, 0.50 inches) and Marielle Segbor in the triple jump (37 feet, 11.50 inches).
Tiffin will be competing in two meets on Saturday, Feb. 11. They will be at the Big Meet (Allendale, Mich.) hosted by Grand Valley State and the Valentine Invitational (Boston) hosted by Boston University.
